Sound Designer NFNR lures us to the experimental realm

Now, it’s fair to say that the world of experimental music can be vast and untamed. Across it stretches rhymeless basslines, distorted animal sounds that previously had no place in the world of music and, most likely, your mum’s old hairdryer making that scratching metallic noise for the world to hear. However, it’s gems like NFNR who keep us coming back for more as she melds industrial and techno, sprinkles in a scattering of ambient and lavishes them with the avant-garde.

The sound designer tells us about her latest album, Dog Rose, out via Corridor Audio: “The songs on the album are about own transformations and states: about finding inner strength (Chorda), obsession and pursuit of one’s own dreams (Ahab), about the sudden forced calm at the start of the lockdown, which hit everyone (Cards against humanity and Dice2). It also explores us being cruelly made to watch through the window, as spring is gaining momentum, which made me stop and enjoy the delicate rosehip flower from my loved one (Dog Rose). These states were resolved in the composition of Eros Bird – the triumphant pleasure of both being and a sense of unity”

Now, it’s not just in the way the producer creates music that’s fiercely unique. NFNR (aka Neither Rich Nor Famous) curator of an experimental platform, Women’s Sound for women and non-binary people in her home country of Ukraine. If you’re curious as to what this might entail, we encourage you to head over to the NFNR at V:UNCASE 2020 excerpt or even just her full Youtube channel linked below for a more in-depth look.
