Interview with rising musician Drew Austin

Drew Austin has been producing records which focus more on inspiring emotion and feeling and doesn’t define his sound by one genre. His latest release is ‘We’ve Got Love’ featuring outstanding vocalist Chardanai and captures the element and feeling of Summer. Opening with clean punchy kicks and snares the track instantly brings jubilation, merging with smooth muddy keys accompanied by a hint of vocals capturing the true element of UK Garage. With beautiful layers building up to the awe-inspiring drop it leaves you breathless.

For anyone that hasn’t heard it yet, how would you describe your sound?
Being a multi-genre producer I’d say my sound is a merge between funk, soul, electronic, ambient with a futuristic feel.

At what point in your life did you have that moment where you said to yourself “This is it. This is the type of music I want to create?”
I think it’s when I hit 18 and more artists within the music industry started to request my productions so I thought it’s time that I take this more serious.

What piece of gear could you never live without?
My Akai MPK Mini. I take that and my Macbook everywhere I go. Really easy to fit in my bag and has great features when I feel to produce a record wherever I am.

Studio work and music creation or performing and interacting with a live audience, what do you prefer?
I actually prefer all elements as I use to be a studio engineer and love recording artists and musicians and I also like to play my music to a crowd. Its a mix between them all to be honest but my favourite is the music creation.

What’s the weirdest or most amazing reaction you’ve had to your music?
The most amazing reaction was being sent video clips of my songs being played in clubs and seeing people dancing to it. I dont think I’ll ever get use to that feeling and the weirdest reaction was my mum doing a mum dance to one of my songs. I don’t think she realised it was my song

Favourite BPM?
Anything between 100bpm to 140bpm as I can create real moody music or something really up tempo

All-time favourite album?
SOUL 4 REAL – Candy Rain

What have you got in the pipeline for the near future?
I have my latest single which drops on 5th June titled “We’ve Got Love” along with a music video. I also have a few more singles coming further on in the year along with remixes for other artists projects. Staying productive
