Water Bear Talks Future Rave Hook Formula, When a Bass House Track Is Festival-Ready and More [Interview]

Water Bear is establishing his presence in the evolving electronic music scene by blending the energy of Future Rave with the emotional depth of progressive house. With releases on over 10 international labels, including those affiliated with Sony and Warner, and recognition in global competitions, his momentum continues to grow within the industry and on dancefloors.

‘Future Harmony’ embodies duality by combining driving rhythms, soaring synths, and a festival-ready atmosphere with a melodic, emotive core. The track is crafted to be both powerful and uplifting, reflecting a forward-thinking approach that balances intensity with connection.

In this exclusive interview, we get to know Water Bear more, as he shares the inspiration behind ‘Future Harmony’, his approach to blending genres, and where his sound is headed next.

What’s something about you that would surprise your fans when you’re not performing as Water Bear?

Outside of performing, I focus a lot on long-term artistic development and refining my production techniques. Many people might expect a fast-paced lifestyle, but I actually spend most of my time in the studio, analyzing sound design, structure, and emotional impact to improve my work at a professional level.

How have your experiences in the music scenes of Sweden and the United States shaped you as an artist?

My exposure to music scenes in Sweden and the United States has helped me understand different industry standards and audience expectations. These environments emphasize both innovation and professionalism, which influenced me to develop a sound that can connect with a global audience while maintaining a clear artistic identity.

What’s the most unexpected influence from outside electronic music that finds its way into your tracks?

I’m often inspired by cinematic music and storytelling elements. These influences help me build emotional depth within my tracks, allowing the music to feel more immersive rather than purely rhythm-driven.

Can you walk us through a typical studio session? How do you go from a blank project to creating your first big Future Rave hook?

I usually begin by establishing a core idea, either a melody or a rhythm that defines the track’s direction. From there, I build layers progressively, focusing on tension and release. My goal is to create a hook that is both impactful and emotionally engaging, suitable for both festival environments and streaming platforms.

What’s your secret sauce when it comes to layering synths and rhythms to make Progressive House and Techno feel both massive and emotional at the same time?

The key is balance. I focus on combining powerful low-end energy with melodic elements that create emotional resonance. By carefully structuring the arrangement and sound layers, I aim to achieve both scale and depth within the same track.

How do you know when a Bass House drop is ready for a festival, or when it needs more of a Techno edge?

It depends on the energy and clarity of the drop. A festival-ready track needs strong impact and immediate response, while a techno-oriented track focuses more on groove and atmosphere. I test this by evaluating how the track translates in different listening environments.

Since you’ve released music on Sony and Warner labels, what’s one production trick or workflow hack you rely on?

Working with labels connected to major distribution networks has taught me the importance of precision and consistency. One key workflow I rely on is refining every element of the mix to ensure clarity and impact, especially in high-energy sections.

How do you see your sound changing in the future, beyond the Future Rave and Progressive House styles you’ve focused on so far?

I plan to expand toward a more cinematic and emotionally driven direction while maintaining high-energy structures. My goal is to develop a sound that evolves with the global electronic music scene and continues to resonate internationally.

What’s the next big goal you’re working toward, like a certain venue, festival, or maybe a full album? Why is it important to you?

My next goal is to further strengthen my professional standing within the international electronic music industry, including more releases with global labels and expanding my reach to broader audiences. This is important to me because it reflects long-term recognition and sustained development as an artist at an international level.

If you could jump ahead five years, what would the ultimate “Water Bear” era look like? Is there a dream collaboration or project you hope to make happen?

In five years, I see Water Bear as a recognized name within the global electronic music industry, with a consistent presence across major platforms and international audiences. I aim to collaborate with artists who share a similar vision of combining energy and emotional depth, pushing the genre forward.
